From vinaya at fosonline.org Thu May 15 09:28:33 2008 From: vinaya at fosonline.org (Vinaya Swaminathan) Date: Thu, 15 May 2008 12:28:33 -0400 Subject: [Europe] Adaptive Management Training Survey Message-ID: <002001c8b6a8$b9143790$2b3ca6b0$@org> As members of a Society for Conservation Biology listserv, we are requesting your participation in a survey targeting conservation practitioners. Please take a minute to read the following and complete the online survey. To our colleagues in the conservation community, Foundations of Success (FOS) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to improve the practice of conservation through training in project cycle management. Project cycle management (also known as adaptive management) provides a method for making more informed decisions about strategies, testing the effectiveness of strategies used, and adapting strategies with lessons learned. FOS trainings are based on the Conservation Measures Partnership (CMP) Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation. CMP, a coalition of well-known conservation NGOs, developed these increasingly-accepted Open Standards as guidelines for the conservation community on how to carry out the steps in the project management cycle. Over the past few years, as the CMP Open Standards have been more widely adopted, FOS has witnessed steadily increasing demand for training in project cycle management. In response, FOS is exploring the expansion of its training offerings. FOS and David Gardiner & Associates have designed a short survey to help assess organizational needs within the conservation community - so as to help FOS provide trainings that organizations like yours would find most helpful in improving conservation results. The survey is available to you and your colleagues in English. We would greatly appreciate your input on this survey by May 31, 2008. The survey will take approximately 10 - 15 minutes, and your responses will remain anonymous. Please click on the link below: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=QF2ygYZnI9AxXTnkYQWTQg_3d_3d Thank you in advance for your participation and your contribution to improving the practice of conservation. It is a joint conference of the "Arbeitsgruppe Trockenrasen" (German Dry Grassland Working Group) and the "Working Group on Dry Grasslands in the Nordic and Baltic Region", but participants from other European regions are also warmly welcome. The main main topics of this year's meeting are "Dry Grasslands in a Changing Environment" (i.e. Management of dry grasslands in cultural landscapes; Conservation of rare species; Changes in land use, eutrophication, and succession; Invasion of neophytes - problems and solutions for dry grasslands) and "Classification of Dry Grasslands" (i.e. supraregional classifications, methodological approaches, use of vegetation databanks). For both topics, there will be one plenary lecture, as well as oral contributions and poster sessions (together 1 1/2 days). One full day will be devoted to excursions to dry grassland nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein. The language of the meeting will basically be English, but there partly will be parallel sessions in German, too. Please, find attached the Second Circular with more detailed information as well as a registration form. Continously updated information can be found on the conference homepage: http://www.ecology.uni- kiel.de/ecology/site/Members/cdolnik/tt2008kiel/tt2008Kiel/view?set_lang uage=de Deadline for registration is 15 June 2008.
