We couldn't be more excited about 2012 and the first ever North America Congress for Conservation Biology (NACCB) this July 15-18 in Oakland, CA. And today we're delighted to kick start the New Year with two important NACCB announcements. First, don't forget abstracts for oral, poster, and speed presentations for NACCB 2012 are due online by Monday, January 30. The full call for abstracts and a complete set of instructions for preparation and submission is available on the Call for Abstracts page . Stony Second, we're proud to introduce Stony, an American pika and the official mascot of NACCB 2012! American pikas are a flagship species when it comes to the challenges North American biodiversity faces under climate change. Pikas are sensitive to high temperatures and require winter snow pack to persist so biologists are keeping a close eye on this species. Conservation scientists are playing a key role in pika management and policy and will be presenting their findings as part of the many science symposiums planned for NACCB 2012. So, come meet Stony and find out more about North American biodiversity, climate change adaptation, and new approaches to environmental policy and management. Once again - Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing you at NACCB this July in Oakland! If you have not already done so please sign up to receive regular updates about the Congress. And follow NACCB 2012 on Facebook facebook image. That is a lot of folks but I wanted to make sure this reaches everyone. This also means many of you will receive more than one copy of this email and for that I apologize. If you are no longer affiliated with an SCB chapter please send me an email with the subject "remove me from SCB chapters" and I will do my best to take you off our contact lists. If this is the case, I do hope you will renew or maintain your SCB membership as we need to sustain a strong global community of conservation scientists given all the challenges we face trying to protect biodiversity and maintain the important role science plays https://www.conbio.org/join/ My name is Adina Merenlender ( http://ucanr.org/sites/merenlender/Our_Lab/ ) and I was elected to the SCB global board of governors. More recently I was appointed to be the chair of the Chapters Committee when Fiona Nagel stepped down. So, please excuse the mistakes I am likely to make as the new chair as I am on a steep learning curve. Below are two critical items we need from each chapter. It is time for all chapters to register with SCB. This is an annual process and we rely greatly on the updates we receive from you both to keep our contact information up and to extend what you all are doing so well to the larger society. To do this please go to http://www.conbio.org/chapters/ and follow the link on the left to "Annual chapter registration" and of course we would appreciate receiving your registration information by the end of January. The next important request is that at the chapters business meeting in New Zealand (ICCB 2011) last month we decided to collect a poster from each SCB chapter to help extend what chapters are doing at SCB meetings. We plan to make these posters available for download from the SCB intranet (available to staff, section presidents, and global board members) so that these folks can print them and put them up at SCB meetings. The purpose of using the attached template is so that all the chapter posters are the same size, look good together, and are easy for folks to digest but of course we expect plenty of variation among our chapters J I am very much looking forward to having these posters up front and center at the upcoming North America Section Congress for Conservation Biology (www.scbnacongress.org) and I know our global office and section presidents are equally excited about having an opportunity to post these. We can't help extend the significant activities you all are doing and increase recognition of the importance of SCB chapters without your help so please make sure that each chapter creates one poster using the attached template and sends the poster to me on email (watch the file size) no later than May 1, 2012. Plenty of time but please don't forget. For general poster making guidelines see http://colinpurrington.com/tips/academic/posterdesign but don't forget to use the attached template. Thanks! There are two scheduled chapter presidents/ch. committee conference calls scheduled for this Spring semester and they are on February 22 and April 25 at 5:00 pm (USA/PST) - I will send around reminders and call in info. I have more ideas to come but will wait until we clean up our list and get through our annual registration period. They are working hard on a new membership web system/data base. They are proposing to "track membership in each of SCB's chapters, ie, people will be able to join their section, chapter, and working group (if desired) as part of the join process." Clearly we do want to know who is already a member of a chapter. The critical question that I need feedback on from chapter leadership is whether you want people to be able to join a specific chapter when they join SCB. This seems fine to me as I would think all Chapters are open to new members interested in joining but I did want to get your feedback on how you feel about SCB members being able to signal their interest in joining a chapter when they become SCB members. Some chapters charge a fee for chapter members and this would not be collected through the SCB membership system but would still be collected locally. All chapters would receive information on those who are interested in joining their chapter and then follow up with those individuals on how they can join your chapter and participate. SCB staff is still discussing how members could receive contact information for the chapters they want to join - this may be possible but the chapter contact information changes frequently so this is still under discussion. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on the ability for SCB members to select a chapter to participate in when they join SCB. Cheers, Adina From: Heather DeCaluwe [mailto:hdecaluwe at conbio.org] Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2012 9:09 AM To: Adina Merenlender Subject: SCB Chapters Hi Adina, As part of the new membership system we are planning to track membership in each of SCB's chapters, ie, people will be able to join their section, chapter, and working group (if desired) as part of the join process. We're still working out the details, but I want to confirm with you that this is something that you and chapter leaders would find useful.
