First, I want to thank Fiona Nagel for taking the time to update me on current issues relating to SCB chapters. Now I need to confess that I am in that over-whelmed state because you all are involved in so many collective projects not to mention all your own chapter activities that I am afraid it may take my whole term to come up to speed. However, I know that I am in good hands with our wonderful Chapters Committee who I am really hoping will continue to serve on the Committee and bear with this leadership transition. It has come to my attention that in the past the SCB Chapters Committee was able to offer travel grants to SCB chapter members to help off-set the cost of attending our annual International Congresses. These funds came from a grant that has been entirely expended and we now have a very small budget for Chapter Committee activities ($3,019 to be exact). In the name of full disclosure (my usual policy) SCB global gives our committee about $2,000/year (exactly that for 2011 anyway). Chairs usually use this money to represent their committee at SCB global board meetings. However, I would like to suggest that we invest some of our funds into fund raising for chapters so that we can build up our account and be in a position to award travel grants in the future. I will be working on this idea with our chapters committee if they agree this is a good route to take given our fiscal realities. So, I am afraid that the bad news is the Chapters Committee does not have funds this year to award travel grants for New Zealand. However, we will do what we can in New Zealand and beyond to raise funds to help those interest attending regional and global meetings in the future. Boy, now I know how Obama felt when he started his administration. For those who can make it to ICCB 2011 I look forward to meeting you there and the Chapters Committee will be organizing a workshop followed by evening social as well as our usual lunch business meeting where we can share ideas about ongoing and new directions.
