This is an important election because, under the new BOG structure as of July 2009, new voting board members are expected to bring certain practical skills or expertise to the table that help to effectively run an organization. As Chapter leaders, I know you understand the value of such experience or knowledge. Please let your Chapter members know that their votes are very important! There are 10 very interesting nominees for 3 open positions. Take a moment to read their statements and check their CVs, and make your voice heard. Election is open from NOW until APRIL 23 2010. SCB members just need to log into their accounts. And a big welcome to all the new officers who came on board last year -- awesome job on taking on leadership roles within SCB :). You're probably finding that leading a Chapter is both extremely rewarding and sometimes challenging. Know that your fellow officers across the world, from students to professionals, share your experiences and passion. This email is to let you know that TUESDAY MARCH 9, 5pm-6:30pm PST, will be the first Business Meeting of 2010 for all Chapters. These meetings will take place quarterly via telephone and replace the monthly conference calls that occurred from Oct 2008-Dec 2009. The focus of the quarterly calls will be to bring Chapters up to date on SCB and Chapter Committee business and to allow Chapters a forum for input and dialogue on Chapter business. Please arrange to have at least one officer or member of your Chapter on the call -- this should be a person(s) who can talk about your Chapter with other call participants and also report minutes back to your other officers and/ or members. The importance of your Chapter's participation on these calls cannot be over-emphasized. They are critical for connecting you with each other, for keeping your Chapter updated on SCB happenings, and for building capacity within your own Chapter. The monthly topic conference calls of the past were very well-received by all who participated, and their Chapters greatly benefitted from them. I'd like to see that benefit continue and to hear many more of you on the business meeting calls. Therefore, in recognition of the importance of your participation, priority for future Chapter project and travel grants will be given to those Chapters that join the quarterly calls. March 9 details are below. If you'd like to add something to the agenda, please email me by FRIDAY MARCH 5. I look forward to speaking with you! To date, we have initiated new courses on ecosystem-based management and structured conservation decision-making, along with initiating conservation roundtables, student driven conservation partnership projects, and have systematically surveyed alumni regarding training priorities. The latest of these efforts to re-think graduate training is a Summit on Graduate Training for Conservation Professionals at UC Davis on May 17. I am writing to invite you to participate in this event.* You may participate in one of two ways; you can sit in on the conversation, or join the webcast. *The agenda for this event is at the bottom of this invitation. To sit in on the event, you will have to support your way to Davis, and we ask that you RSVP (below). If you would like to participate in the webcast, we will provide details at http://johnmuir.ucdavis.edu/ as we finalize them. However, we will have the capacity to electronically ask questions of the panelists. We hope that this event serves as a launching point for a national discussion on how Universities can engage in specific training for conservation professionals. We will initiate this discussion by hearing from science leaders from large conservation NGO?s on this issue. We are also inviting leading thinkers from government agencies and others that have put some thought into what kinds of people are professionally appealing to their agencies. Several critical questions emerge repeatedly in this conversation. How do universities create institutional change? This can be considered very broadly, and there are several models out there. Which ones work, which ones do not? Given the broad expertise required of the varied conservation professional jobs, where should graduate training focus? Should we expect students to gain business management skills alongside research skills? What should be the role of PhD training among conservation professionals? How can US Universities participate in international capacity building in conservation? This issue has emerged in several recent papers (Kroll 2007, Morse et al 2007, Nelson et al 2008, Muir and Schwartz 2009), and we encourage you to peruse these prior to participating in this event. There is, of course, discourse on this for several years, including papers by Dietz, Inouye, Jacobson and Meffe, among others. We expect there to be limited space for this event, so we are asking people to RSVP for the event, and to take this RSVP seriously. We will not have enough seats to accommodate everyone, so please RSVP only if you can commit to coming to the event. The RSVP takes approximately 1 minute to complete. To RSVP: http://envnet.ucdavis.edu/tools/rsvp/?gecp2010 If there are students out there who would like to come, we may have limited capacity to put you up in our homes. Please contact me directly: kldeiner at ucdavis.edu In addition to the summit on education the SCB chapter at Davis is holding a music festival fundraiser for our sister SCB Chapter in Bolivia to support their educational and conservation programing on Sunday, May 16th. We will be posting details on the website as them become finalized: http://scb.ucdavis.edu/ Thank you and we hope that you can come.
