I want to bring you up-to-date on a very important development that will vastly improve Chapter resources and activities. Due to some changes and new opportunities in SCB, the Chapters Committee has recently expanded to 13 members in order to better serve, support, and coordinate Chapters. Each member is focused on a specific programmatic or operational function of Chapters. Their roles and contact info are below; if you have a particular question or idea, please contact the Committee member responsible for that specific area. You can also expect to see emails from them posted to the listserv in regards to different activities or projects. I also encourage you to just drop the Committee or individuals a note saying hello :). This is a very dynamic and exciting group of people. Some of you had the opportunity to meet many of them in Edmonton; there will be other opportunities to interact virtually and in person in the future. The new Committee members are each capable, committed, and energetic supporters of Chapters, and all have previous experience as a leader of one or more Chapters. SCB couldn?t ask for a better group of people to usher Chapters into a new era of local activity, partnerships, and global contributions! While there are still right wing nut-cases arguing that there is no such thing as climate change, or that humans are not responsible, or that the consequences would not be serious, we must be voicing the SCB view on what the consequences of climate change will likely be for natural systems and biodiversity. As the policy coordinator, I'll help engage chapter representatives in policy discussions, aid chapters in navigating the policy approvals process found online at and answer any policy related questions you may have. For those of you who couldn't make it to the conference this year in Edmonton, one of the hot topic policy issues discussed was the Keystone XL Pipeline, a controversial pipeline that would carry as much as 900,000 barrels of Canadian oil sands petroleum each day from Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico coast. Fearing the long lasting environmental impacts that such a pipeline could have upon endangered species, the SCB policy team prepared several press releases, had a public radio broadcast, and a television spot on the CBC News while in Canada. Now, the issue is being brought before the U.S. Senate, where the SCB continues to make our presence known. For a full description of our formal stance on the issue, visit our policy website at . Also, sometime over the next month keep your eyes peeled for our policy survey. In an effort to make policy activities more accessible to chapters, the SCB Policy team wants to know where you think we should focus our policy priorities. This is an exciting time for chapter involvement in policy and SCB Global is seeking your help in addressing regional, national, and even global policy issues. In the mean time, don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have at . I look forward to working with all of you, Cameron Kovach -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Hi everyone, As suggested at the Edmunton meeting I would like to share a success story from the New Orleans Chapter. Our chapter wrote a grant for our recycling program - you may remember that I emailed the list a while ago asking for your votes. We are pleased to announce that we were one of the winners and have received $1,000 for our recycling program! Thank you all so much for your help in getting us this grant. We are thrilled to have the extra funding to expand the program. I would love to hear any other success stories from other chapters (Bolivia maybe?) Thanks everyone! The focus of these quarterly calls is on bringing Chapters up to date on SCB and Chapter Committee business. It also allows Chapters a forum for input and dialogue on Chapter business. Please arrange to have at least 1 officer or member of your Chapter on the call -- this should be a person(s) who can talk about your Chapter with other call participants and also report minutes back to your other officers and/ or members. Call-in information for Chapters outside NA is below. The importance of your Chapter's participation on these calls cannot be over-emphasized! This is the main way you can connect with each other, keep up-to-date on SCB happenings that affect your Chapter, and have regular input on SCB business. In recognition of the importance of your participation, priority for Chapter project and travel grants is given to those Chapters that join the quarterly calls. September 7 details are below. If you'd like to see something on the agenda, please email me by FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 3. I look forward to speaking with you!
