Message-ID: <969EE130-6D5C-437B-AF13-B43601461B1D@umn.edu> Dear Chapter leaders, I'm very excited to announce that 4 new opportunities have opened up for emerging leaders in SCB! These positions are on the newly- expanded Chapters Committee and are wonderful ways for you or your members to play influential roles within the larger Society. The 4 new Committee positions are Secretary, Financial Affairs Officer, Conferences Coordinator, and a Liaison to SCB's Education Committee. Details are below. These positions require people familiar with Chapters and are ideal for grad students, young professionals, or anyone who wants to contribute meaningfully to SCB and its Chapters. I can tell you from personal experience that becoming engaged in SCB through a committee is an invaluable experience. As a grad student, I helped start and chaired SCB's Chapters Committee, helped organize the 2003 Duluth conference, and took the lead in various other ways. The experience, professional contacts, and resume-building were incredible benefits that led to my first job post-graduation and to my election to the Board of Governors. As leaders yourselves, you too know the value you're gaining with SCB. I encourage you to share your insights with your members as you help solicit for these new positions. You should know that this exciting expansion is occurring because of a recent restructuring in SCB's Board of Governors (BOG). The upshot is that I am once again Chair of the Chapters Committee (all committee chairs must be elected members of the BOG). Aletris Neils, who took on that role 1-1/2 years ago, is now Sub-Chair and Coordinator for New Chapters. Functionally, I am the go-to person for issues related to bylaws and the Committee; Aletris is still the go-to person for starting a Chapter and for most other concerns (although this will shift slightly as the Committee grows). In addition, the Chapters Committee has been made an official BOG committee, meaning that we've been added to the SCB bylaws and have official terms of reference listed on the main website. I invite you to check us out at www.conbio.org/Activities/Committees/Chapters/. Big changes indeed! Bottom-line, I now have the freedom and ability to expand our Committee in very new and exciting ways that will allow Chapters to interact more with each other and with other parts of SCB in truly meaningful ways. And so, I would appreciate your help in spreading the word to you members ASAP. Please feel free to forward this email to your members as the 4 positions should be filled by the END OF APRIL. All inquiries should be sent directly to me and I will provide more info. Also, if you send me names of people you'd like to nominate who you think would be a good fit, I'll contact them directly. You are, of course, welcome to apply yourself. Many thanks for all your good work, Fiona > Dr. Fiona Nagle Conservation Biology/Conflict Management Board of Governors, Society for Conservation Biology (www.conbio.org) Chair, Chapters Committee, Society for Conservation Biology ********************* 1) Secretary Needed: Someone who loves to keep people organized and who takes good notes. S/he may also help put together a periodic newsletter for Chapters about events and activities of general interest to all Chapters. This person is critical for helping the Committee, Chapters, the Executive Office, and the SCB Board of Governors keep on top of Chapter business through minutes, reports, etc. Requirements: Current or former Chapter member who is organized, takes good notes, and can follow through in a timely manner on distributing minutes and answering Chapter queries. 2) Financial Affairs Officer Needed: Someone with an interest in helping Chapters to be financially viable. Activities include offering advice to Chapters on fundraising and 501c3 issues, coordinating fundraising and grants with the Executive Office or other SCB subgroups, seeking small grants or other funding sources, and assisting with grant requests from Chapters. This person is an important resource for supporting the activities of Chapters since money acquisition is one of our biggest challenges! It's also a great avenue for learning about funders and the funding process, interacting with foundations and other financial resources, and for building relationships with some of the top people in SCB. Requirements: Current or former Chapter member with experience in fundraising, grant writing, and nonprofits. Organized and can follow through in a timely manner on answering Chapter queries. 3) Conference Coordinator Needed: Someone who can coordinate activities for Chapters at the SCB global conferences and NA-Section conferences. This person also advises and helps Chapters with their own local or regional meetings as needed. Conferences are the only time members of various Chapters get to interact face-to-face and with other subgroups of SCB, so this person plays a key role in developing the Chapter network and capacity. Requirements: Current or former Chapter member with a good track record in organizing events such as workshops, symposia, mixers, etc. Must be a good problem-solver, organized, outgoing, and love to work with a variety of people. 4) Education Coordinator (SCB Education Committee Liaison I) Needed: Someone with an interest in coordinating education activities across Chapters and in developing/overseeing Chapter contributions to the larger educational efforts of SCB. Projects may include helping improve SCB's educational resources website, providing input on education activities at global conferences, and developing materials for various audiences. This position liaises with SCB's Education Committee and attends meetings of both the Chapters and Education Committees (www.conbio.org/Activities/Committees/Education/). Lots of opportunity for creativity and growth, and for shaping the position as you see fit. Requirements: Current or former Chapter member with a strong interest in and experience with K-12, college, grad, public, or continuing education. Organized and can follow through in a timely manner on answering Chapter queries. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thank you!!!! It's wonderful to see how being a Chapter leader has whetted your appetites and trained you to become leaders at higher and different capacities :). Almost all the positions are filled and you can expect to see some exciting activities in the next few months. Only 1 position now remains open: the Financial Affairs Coordinator. It may seem daunting or dry to some people, but this is actually a very cool and important position for someone with some experience in fundraising and/or funds management. Given that funding is one of the biggest challenges for Chapters, it's vital that we have someone to fill this role. SO. Could you please spread the word among your members and also suggest possible nominees for this position? It's ok if you're not sure if they're willing and able to serve -- I'll contact those people directly and see if they're interested. I need to have a few names in hand by FRIDAY APRIL 30 -- we're about to have our first full committee meeting and should have all members in place and participating.
