TOMORROW, MAY 5 at 5pm-6pm CA time: the May discussion for all Chapters :). To join the conference call, dial 1-712-580-1800, then 487242# when prompted. I strongly encourage all of you to have 1 person (or more) from your Chapter participate. They can share your experiences and report back to your board and members. This month we'll be discussing your Chapter's activities in ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. Whatever level you target (K-12, undergrad, grad, professional, public), we can talk about it. Please be prepared to share a little about what you do with the others on the call, and we can have an open discussion about some of your successes and challenges. This is a good forum for exchanging ideas and learning from each other, in order to improve your work and effectiveness. You may even want to partner with another Chapter on some of your ideas! Our guest caller will be Eleanor Sterling, Chair of SCB's Education Committee. We'll also be talking about how the resources of the education committee can help your Chapter, and how your Chapter's experiences can help SCB as a whole. 'See' you tomorrow :) Fiona (PS: If you're new to this listserv, the conference calls are a monthly forum for all chapters to discuss business and topics of interest. As conservation practitioners, we all know the world must get a handle on out-of-control growth if we?re truly going to live sustainably within the natural environment. Toward that end, in 2004 SCB?s North America Section adopted a formal position in ecological economics called ?The Steady State Economy as a Sustainable Alternative to Economic Growth? (http://www.conbio.org/Sections/ NAmerica/NAS-SCBPositionOnEconomicGrowth.cfm). But how do we, as Chapters and conservationists, translate this position into real- world results? SCB as a whole is able to influence policy in this regard; CHAPTERS have the unique ability to effect on-the-ground changes in awareness and practice. Next Tuesday's conference call focuses on what the NA Section?s position statement means and how your Chapter can incorporate its precepts into your own work with Chapter members and the public. Dr. Jon Rosales, a SCB expert on science-policy, will lead the discussion on how you can specifically apply ?steady state? principles in your Chapter's activities. SCB Chapters really CAN make a difference! I strongly encourage all of you to have at least 1 person from your Chapter participate in the call so they can share your experiences and report back to your board and members. This is a discussion that can help all of you in your work, and it'll be an engaging conversation with your participation. Talk to you next week, call-in details below :) Fiona (PS: If you're new to this listserv, the conference calls are a monthly forum for all chapters to discuss business and topics of interest. His interests include political economy, science-policy, climate change, indigenous knowledge, limits to growth, old-growth forests, reforestation, and equity issues related to environmental affairs. Jon currently teaches in the Environmental Studies department at St. Lawrence University. He was an early member of SCB?s Minnesota Chapter as a grad student and has continued to interact with Chapters throughout career and location changes. ??
