Please review the conference details and information on how to accept or decline this invitation. Subject: SCB's 1st Tuesdays All-Chapters Conference Call Comments/Agenda: CALL #6: The BOG Wants to Hear from YOU Welcome to the SIXTH all-chapters conference call. ***March 28-30 is the 1st meeting of 2009 for SCB's Board of Governors. It is also my first meeting as your Representative. Help me tell them what you want them to hear. This call will be dedicated to me listening to you: your ideas, suggestions, complaints, accolades. What do you want the Board (or individual members) to know about or think about? How can they assist you to make your chapter the best it can be? In return, the BOG needs your help too. We have 5 topics on the agenda, and I think you could have *very* beneficial input on them. They are: *Membership -- how to increase numbers, improve benefits, what can people pay (your thoughts would be great on this topic) *Conference Models -- how to improve annual meetings (your thoughts would be great on this topic too) *Publications -- input on SCB's journals & editorial processes (btw, Gary Meffe is stepping down as editor after many years, to be replaced by Erica Fleishman by the end of 2009) *"Conservation" magazine -- have you read SCB's newest journal? *SCB Governance -- how do you think we're doing? -------- The all-chapters conference call is held every month on the first Tuesday, 5:00pm Pacific Time (California). It lasts approximately 1 hour. I encourage each of you to have at least one representative of your chapter on the call each month. ***Chapters outside the US: By following the directions in this email (below), you are able to join this call. For Chapters outside North America: If you have difficulty with the international phone cost, please contact me.*** ---When you join the call, please announce your name and chapter. Below are minutes from the MARCH 3 All-Chapters Conference Call. For those of you who were unable to make it, the topic was the upcoming BOG spring retreat. I asked for input from Chapters on 4 items we?ll be considering at the retreat, as well as items that you would like me to bring to the attention of the BOG or individual members. We had a great discussion! If you would like to add your 2 cents on the discussion below, please send me your comments and ideas by WEDNESDAY MARCH 25. I leave for the retreat next Thursday and will have sporadic email access during that time. This is my first meeting as your BOG representative, so help me to give voice to your best interests. The next call is APRIL 7. Watch for the upcoming announcement on the topic. I expect you all to have someone from your chapter listening in :). Tell your friends! Cheers, Fiona (PS Many thanks to Andy West of the Missouri Chapter for providing the majority of these minutes.) > Dr. Fiona Nagle Conservation Biology/Conflict Management Board of Governors, Society for Conservation Biology (Chapters Representative) ****************** Minutes from The 1st Tuesdays All-Chapters Conference Call #6: ?The BOG Wants to Hear from YOU? March 3, 2009, 5:00p-6:00p PST Participants: 4 NA chapters, 2 SCB EO staff, BOG Chapter Rep We covered 4 items to be discussed at the BOG retreat (membership, SCB conference models, SCB publications/Conservation Magazine, SCB governance) then moved on to some general discussion about Chapters activities and the monthly conference call. The participants had a lively dialogue with great input from everyone. SCB Membership Four ideas for increasing Chapter membership were put forth: 1) Regular emails to Chapters if someone joins SCB from their state (and indicate whether or not they joined the Chapter); 2) Alert current SCB members to Chapter opportunities as part of a general SCB mailing; 3) Direct new incoming SCB members to a Chapters page when they are paying their dues, so they can opt to join a chapter at the same time they join SCB; 4) Put base SCB membership dues no higher than $25/year. Discussion: The general consensus was that the EO can do extra things to encourage incoming and existing SCB members to join a Chapter, but the present email and web systems don?t allow easy ways of getting information out to Chapters about members from states or regions. There are also privacy issues that prevent the EO from releasing email and contact info, although Chapters can contact members in their area with the direct help of Laura Walko in the EO (just send her an email request). We talked about whether a general SCB email would be useful (or just annoying), targeting all members within a geographic area advising them of a local Chapter(s). There may be a way that the membership could be searched quarterly or 2x/year for new members, who could be encouraged to seek out and join Chapters. The idea of a clickable ?Chapters button? on the SCB membership form that would direct new members to a ?Join a Chapter? page has been lobbied for several years. Although this is not currently possible, it may be do-able with the new web system coming in later this year. Re membership costs, students and retirees already have a discount, and a suggestion was made to have a one-time life membership for seniors of $70 or $100 to encourage increased giving. Conference Models The BOG will be considering the timing and types of meetings, as well as whether they should continue to alternate between NA and international locations. The discussion was that local and regional meetings, such as the upcoming NA Flagstaff meeting, could be a good economic choice if they have a wider thematic appeal for an audience beyond the immediate geographic region. The upcoming Flagstaff meeting might serve as a good model for NA, depending on its success. The point was made that if annual SCB meetings become too spread out geographically or time-wise (such as being held in NA only once every few years), then an entire graduate class might never attend a global meeting. This was seen as detrimental for professional development and motivation. A concern was also expressed that there is alot of competition from sister NGOs in terms of other conferences that SCB members might opt to attend instead of a SCB meeting. Publication/Conservation Magazine There were few comments about SCB publications. One participant noted that, although ?Conservation? is an excellent magazine, it no longer has the same appeal for conservation practitioners and field managers as did the earlier incarnation, ?Conservation in Practice?. ?Conservation? is now focused more on general issues rather than the actual practice of conservation . SCB governance No comments. Other topics: Finding Your Chapter?s Niche After discussing the above 4 BOG items, the conversation shifted to other topics of interest. One Chapter (Central CA Coast) noted that they are still trying to find their regional niche, the unique role and benefits they have for local SCB members. An older Chapter (DC) offered the advice that, in their experience, their niche was guided by the demographics of their membership as well as the unique attributes of their location. What DC found was that their original assumption of what their role would be was erroneous: it would seem that a Chapter focused on policy issues would be an obvious choice for the DC area but, in fact, because the members are so focused on policy in their daily work they actually wanted something very different from their local Chapter. DC found its niche by doing an online survey, asking for their members? interests and comments, and then shifting the Chapter focus accordingly. By the way, DC reports over 200 members in their Chapter. What a great story for serving your members? needs and getting them really excited about participating! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
