Dear Chapters, You have been invited by Fiona Nagle to join a conference call using FreeConference.com. Please review the conference details and information on how to accept or decline this invitation. Subject: 1st Tuesdays All-Chapters Conference Call Comments/Agenda: CALL #9: Ecological Economics & YOU Welcome to the NINTH all-chapters conference call. *** Want to REALLY make a difference in people's global impact? As conservation practitioners, we know all-to-well the ecological impacts of economic growth on biodiversity. In order to live sustainably with the natural environment, the world must get a handle on out-of-control growth. Toward that end, in 2004 SCB's North America Section adopted a formal position in ecological economics called "The Steady State Economy as a Sustainable Alternative to Economic Growth". But how do we, as Chapters and conservationists, translate this position into real-world results? How can such a position statement be used to create on-the-ground changes in awareness and practice? Today's talk will focus on what the NA Section's position statement means and how your Chapter can incorporate its precepts into your own work with Chapter members and the public. SCB as a whole is able to influence policy in this regard; CHAPTERS have the unique ability to effect change at a very personal and daily level. Yes, SCB Chapters really CAN make a difference! GUEST CALLER: JON ROSALES (North America Section, Board of Directors) POSITION STATEMENT: http://www.conbio.org/Sections/NAmerica/NAS- SCBPositionOnEconomicGrowth.cfm -------- The all-chapters conference call is held every month on the first Tuesday, 5:00pm Pacific Time (California). Message-ID: Dear Chapter leaders, I?m very excited to announce that 3-5 new opportunities have opened up for emerging leaders in SCB. These positions are geared specifically for Chapter members, and are a wonderful way for your members (or you) to play influential roles within the organization. The 3-5 new positions are on SCB?s Education Committee, Student Affairs Committee, and the newly forming Resource Coordinating Committee. Details are below. These positions require a Chapter member, and are ideal for a grad student, young professional, or anyone who wants to contribute meaningfully to SCB. You are, of course, welcome to apply yourself too. I can tell you from personal experience that becoming engaged in SCB as a leader is invaluable. As a grad student, I helped start and chaired SCB?s Chapters Advisory Committee, helped organize the 2003 Duluth conference, and took the lead in various other ways. The experience, professional contacts, and resume-building were incredible benefits that led to my first job post-graduation and to my election to the BOG. As leaders yourselves, you too know the value you?re gaining! I encourage you to share your insights with your members as you help solicit for these new positions. Did you know that the majority of active SCB members are on the Board, committees, other leadership positions, AND IN CHAPTERS? Regardless, it?s critical for the future of Chapters that Chapter members take on more visible roles and have more voice within SCB. Why? Because the organization is growing, internationalizing, and participating in new arenas (like policy and partnership-building). It's a vibrant worldwide group and Chapter members are an important part of SCB?s functioning. Yet the incredible work and perspectives of Chapters are sometimes getting lost in the shuffle. So let?s take every opportunity to make sure that doesn?t happen! I would appreciate it if you would forward this email to all your members ASAP. The positions should be filled or considered by the Beijing meeting in JULY. All inquiries should be sent directly to me. Also, please send me names of people you?d like to nominate who you think would be a good fit, and I?ll contact them directly. Many thanks for all your good work, Fiona > Dr. Fiona Nagle Conservation Biology/Conflict Management Board of Governors, Society for Conservation Biology (Chapters Representative) ********************* 1) SCB Education Committee (http://www.conbio.org/Activities/ Committees/Education/) Needed: 1-2 Chapter members with an interest in developing/overseeing Chapter contributions to the educational efforts of SCB. Some projects may include helping improve SCB?s educational resources website, coordinating educational efforts among Chapters, and providing input on education activities at global conferences. All education levels are targeted and audiences include children, the public, scientists, managers, and decision-makers. Requirements: A Chapter member(s) with an interest in K-12, college, grad, public, or continuing education. Good web skills helpful but not necessary. Lots of opportunity for creativity and growth, and for shaping the position as you see fit. -------------- 2) SCB Student Affairs Committee (http://www.conbio.org/Activities/ Committees/Student Affairs/) Needed: 1-2 Chapter members with an interest in promoting student interests and developing student resources. Some projects may include overseeing the Student Awards/Best Student Papers at global meetings, developing student-professional interactions, and helping with the Committee?s mentoring program. Targets include grad and undergrad. Requirements: A Chapter member(s) with an interest in student activities and a keen sense of student needs. Ideal candidate is a current student, recent student, or faculty. A sharp sense of fun helps! -------------- 3) SCB Resource Coordinating Committee (newly-forming committee, explanation and draft terms of reference below) Needed: 1 Chapter member with an interest in helping Chapters fundraise and in building bridges with other SCB sub-groups. Some projects may include reviewing grant proposals, educating Chapters in funding ?how-to's?, and liaising among Chapters, Sections, and the Executive Office. Requirements: A Chapter member with experience in fundraising and/or grant writing and/or grant review. This person will be an important resource for supporting the activities of Chapters since money acquisition is one of our biggest challenges! It?s also a great avenue for learning about funders and the funding process, interacting with foundations and other financial resources, and for building relationships with some of the top people in SCB. This Committee is an outgrowth of the current Development Committee (http://www.conbio.org/Activities/Committees/Development/). As of June 2009, the Development Committee is being divided into 2 groups: the Resource Coordinating Committee and the Development Council. The 1st helps coordinate funds and SCB?s resources; the 2nd advises on global fundraising. The Resource Coordinating Committee will be comprised of SCB section representatives, working group representatives, and a single overall Chapter representative to facilitate development coordination between the EO and the distributed SCB community's needs. The focus of this committee is to enable the various arms of SCB to coordinate, communicate, and collaborate in achieving local and regional fundraising goals. This is a fund-seeking support committee for the broader SCB community. Members of the Resource Coordinating Committee will be selected by each section and working group plus a member selected by the BOG Chapter Representative (Fiona Nagle). The committee will include representation from the EO and BOG as necessary. (draft as of 6/4/09) -Empowers the diverse SCB community to coordinate, communicate, and collaborate on fundraising activities; -Supports the vibrant work of the growing global SCB; -Reviews and coordinates proposals from sections, working groups, and chapters and decides which proposals should be submitted to funders; -Serves as the help desk for SCB community fundraising needs; -Ensures better communication between the EO and the distributed SCB network; -Broadens our level of member participation. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
