We?ve had about 6-10 chapters steadily represented in the first 3 months of these calls. I want to increase that number, and you should want to too. So here are the TOP SIX REASONS for you to want to join in: 1) Get to meet and "hang out" with some very cool officers of other chapters. Make new friends. Get to know Aletris, your new Chapters Committee Chair. 2) Have a voice on what's happening with SCB. Last month, those people on the call were given the special opportunity to review and comment on the SHORT version of the draft policy recommendations that John gave to Obama's administration in December. John had only 2 days to turn it around, so the people on the call were able to help him out. You snooze, you lose. 3) Plug into SCB's inner workings. The April call will focus on the March BOG meeting, and I'll be giving an update of what went down. 4) Let SCB know what's important to you and what works (or not) for your chapter. We've had, and will continue to have, regular guest callers from the EO and elsewhere. This is your chance to connect directly with the powers-that-be for advice, to give suggestions, or make complaints (hopefully not too many of those). 5) Provide an extra service for your chapter members. We often discuss items of interest to your members, and you'll be doing them a huge favor and service by relaying good info and ideas back to them. This month's call is a perfect example. Even if you're not planning to go to China, some of your members probably are. And 2 of the major Conference organizers will be on the call, so you will get the inside scoop. and most importantly... 6) Say hi to me. Ever since I moved on, I don't hear directly from the chapters much anymore. I miss you guys! Listen. The call is only once a month on a weeknight (for those in NA) at a time that is neither too early nor too late for most callers, no matter what your time zone (5pm in California). You can designate someone to be on the calls, or rotate among your officers. Whatever. Just come out and play. Please direct any questions to me or Aletris (aletris_neils at yahoo.com). Thanks! >Fiona ---------------------------- Hey Chapter Leaders, I just wanted to remind everyone that all chapters need to register and ratify by 31 January 2009 to remain active. So by 31 January 2009 please do the following things: 1. Annual Chapter Registration. Go to http://www.conbio.org/ chapters/AnnualReports/ and report your Chapter?s Annual Registration. This only takes 10 minutes, but is important for us to keep tabs on all chapters and is crucial for SCB?s reporting. 2. All Existing Chapters must ratify the new Chapter Agreement, Bylaws, and Charter (ABCs). For currently existing Chapters: new documentation must be either e-mailed to the BOG Chapter Representative (Fiona Nagle at nagl0026 at umn.edu) or faxed to Laura at the SCB Executive Office (703-995-4633) by JANUARY 31, 2009. Please review the new Chapter Handbook with all Chapter members. The new Chapter Agreement, Bylaws and Charter (ABCs) must be reviewed and signed by the Chapter Board. Links to these documents can be found at: http://www.conbio.org/chapters/info/NewChapters.cfm For Chapters that are forming and are not yet official, it is not necessary that your documents are in by 31 January. If anyone has questions, concerns, or problems please don?t hesitate to contact me! I hope everyone?s New Year is off to a terrific start. Thanks for everything you do for your Chapter and for SCB! As the chair of the student affairs committee of the Society for Conservation Biology, I would like to mention to you the Student Awards Competition. This competition is open to all students submitting an abstract for an oral presentation (an additional extended abstract is needed); we're hoping to have a strong contingent of students from all over the world. I would like to ask the members of the list to spread the word among students about these awards. In past meetings, the session where the 12 student finalists present has consistently been one of the best-attended and highest quality events. Students have the option of applying for these awards when they submit their abstracts on the meeting website with instructions for submission on the meeting website (http://www.conbio.org/2009/abstracts). Of course, we are also waiting for a lot of international presentations from non-students at the meeting. I therefore ask the members of the listserv to spread the word about this deadline to all their colleagues. Sincerely, Dave Patrick David A. Dear Friends and Colleagues, How would you like your classroom or campus audience to have a one-on-one session with your member of Congress or Senator? Just send us an e-mail , and we will work to make it happen. As a critical part of The National Teach-In on Global Warming Solutions , and with support from the Earth Day Network , we are coordinating with Speaker Pelosi's office to set up a bank of computers in the capitol to create an historic opportunity for national dialogue. This is a terrific chance for young people across the country to have their voices heard! Your representative can sit down at a laptop in DC and have a half an hour, low-carbon, non-partisan round-table with a campus audience-a class or assembly-on Wednesday, February 4th. Please forward this message to interested folks across your state and region, and help us flood congress with invites to this vital day of engagement. To learn more, join our bi-weekly organizing call, Wednesday, January 7 that noon eastern. Environmental educator Dr. Tony Cortese will headline the call, and talk about how you can use the National Teach-In to highlight the American College and University President's Climate Commitment. Call in number is 1-218-486-8700, passcode 020509. Campus-to-Congress dialogues, and progress on the Climate Commitment are just two components of the National Teach-In. One month away, it is not too late to sign up your school, faith organization or civic group Hello listserv subscribers, SCB is making many changes this year! One change affects all SCB listservs. Within the next two months, we will change listserv providers. The new service includes upgrades such as html format, information on the writer of the email, ability to receive PDA versions, easy-search online archiving, etc. When the new listserv is launched, this listserv will be cancelled / closed. More information will follow in the coming months, including details on when this listserv will close and how to join the new one. Thank you for your participation in this listserv and in SCB's activities. We look forward to hearing more from you in 2009. Message-ID: Hi everyone, Next Tues, the focus of the conference call is on how to approach legislators and others re the science and policy issues your chapter finds most important. We will have 2 very special guests on the call, both of whom have a lifetime of experience for you to draw upon: 1) Dominick Dellasala -- President-elect for the NA Section and previous Policy Chair for the section. Dominick is a founder and executive director of the National Center for Conservation Science and Policy in Oregon, and has a wealth of experience approaching lawmakers and testifying before congressional committees. His organization is "committed to bridging the gap between sound conservation science and natural resource policy...(and) translates conservation science to lawmakers to ensure that policy reflects the best available science on a number of important ecological issues." (http://www.nccsp.org/) 2) John Fitzgerald -- SCB Policy Director. John worked as a legislative aide for four years, a subcommittee counsel for two years, and has been in Congressional relations for 24 years. He also worked with state legislators in Massachusetts and Indiana while in college and law school. Now he works to articulate SCB's policy positions and bring them to the attention of people on The Hill. Tuesday's discussion will be especially helpful as you and your chapter members gear up for your local policymakers as well as the new congress and administration.
