I encourage all of you to check it out, submit papers, and attend if you can! The theme is broad enough that it should appeal to everyone in North America, and there will also be some focus on transboundary issues with Mexico. It is also a good opportunity to present student research. Note the call for proposals due APRIL 30 and call for papers due JUNE 1. ***All Chapter members are invited to help review submitted proposals and abstracts (contact Allison Jones at allison at wildutahproject.org). Please pass this on to your members as well. A Word on Your Conference Organizers The National Park Service and the USGS Colorado Plateau Research Station, based in Flagstaff, Arizona, have a 20-year record of collaboratively organizing the Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau. The Biennial Conference has been considered by many to be an international exemplar for bringing scientists and managers together to deal with regional conservation issues. The Biennial Conference has also been uniquely open to student scientists presenting their latest research. In 2009 the Biennial Conference will be celebrating its 10th anniversary ? and organizers wanted to do something special! Since 2001, SCB has been increasingly focused on growing as a global organization. Because annual meetings in North America (where a majority of SCB?s members reside) have now become less frequent, the North American Section began planning in 2008 for the first-ever sub- regional meeting in North America. The vision behind these meetings is that SCB Chapters, with the endorsement of the SCB North American Section, will sometimes host sub-regional meetings as a way to help support the large network of North American conservation biologists. SCB?s Colorado Plateau Chapter has long been a key partner in the USGS Biennial Conference. As such, they were asked to be a central organizer of the first sub-regional meeting. Hence, the 2009 meeting planning committee includes the USGS Southwest Biological Science Center, SCB Colorado Plateau Chapter along with other Chapters in the region, and board members from the SCB North American Section and SCB Global. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Extra grad and college ed via seminars, K-12 projects, public outreach, continuing ed for professionals -- all involve imparting wisdom and knowledge, and encouraging people to continue making a difference in the world of conservation and biodiversity. Next week's all-chapters conference call is a great one: we'll be talking about environmental education and the activities you undertake as Chapters. The call will be an open forum where you can talk about your projects, share ideas, get feedback, and improve your effectiveness with your members and educational audience. Would you like to share your experiences with your env ed projects? Get some new ideas for your Chapter's work? Partner with other Chapters and SCB groups on making a difference in education? Discuss theoretical approaches to env ed? This is the call where you can do all that and more! Info on how to join the call is below. We'll also be talking about SCB's Environmental Education Committee, the group that oversees SCB's education and teaching tools webpage (http://www.conbio.org/Resources/education/), a wonderful resource you can use and contribute to to help your efforts in env ed. Eleanor Sterling, long-time Chair of SCB's Education Committee, will be this month's guest caller (more info below). I strongly encourage all of you to have at least 1 person from your Chapter participate in the call so they can share your experiences and report back to your board and members. This is a discussion that can help all of you in your work, and it'll be an engaging conversation with your participation. Talk to you next week :) Fiona (PS: If you're new to this listserv, the conference calls are a monthly forum for all chapters to discuss business and topics of interest. It occurs the 1st Tues of the month, for 1 hour in the evening. All chapter officers and leaders are welcome.) > Dr. Fiona Nagle Conservation Biology/Conflict Management Board of Governors, Society for Conservation Biology (Chapters Representative) Eleanor Sterling, Chair, SCB's Education Committee: Eleanor is the Director of the Center for Biodiversity & Conservation (CBC) at the American Museum of Natural History and helped establish the CBC's Network of Conservation Educators and Practitioners, a group that creates and implements educational materials and teaching resources at all levels. She is also an adjunct at Columbia University and serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the EEEB Department. Eleanor has a wealth of knowledge and experience in various aspects of environmental education and outreach. SCB's Education Committee helps coordinate educational activities across SCB's subgroups and at the annual meetings. It has 4 main foci: 1) Graduate education (resources for graduate students and those who teach at the graduate level); 2) Continuing education (on- going training for conservation practitioners), with activities including symposia, workshops and short courses; 3) Education activities for primary and secondary schools as well as local community audiences; and 4) Maximizing the utility of the SCB web site as a hub for making conservation education materials available worldwide. The Committee is comprised of several members-at-large as well as section and working group representatives; Eleanor and Fiona (Chapters BOG Rep) are now actively seeking a chapters representative (s) to add to the committee. http://www.conbio.org/Activities/ Committees/Education/ > > > Dear Chapters, > > You have been invited by Fiona Nagle to join a conference call > using FreeConference.com. > > Please review the conference details and information on how to > accept or decline this invitation. > > > > > Subject: 1st Tuesdays All-Chapters Conference Call > Comments/Agenda: CALL #8: Environmental Education Forum -- AN OPEN > DISCUSSION > > Welcome to the EIGHTH all-chapters conference call. > > *** Environmental education is the backbone for much of what we do > as Chapters.
